New positions for notifications
At present, notification can be placed only in the corners of the screen. I think it would be good to add another positions:
Screen center
Top center
Bottom center
Left center
Right center

After more consideration, I think there is a way for notifications to begin at the centre of the screen. More work will need to be done, however. Marking as planned for R2.8 or later.

Yes, the original user's request was a Screen center, but I expanded it. I failed to find any style that supports this position. Right now I got the idea (on this occasion) to another "feature request" - I will create a new topic for it.

Certain display styles can implement custom positioning which allows them to appear in the centre of the screen already - is this what's required here?

If we exclude the directs left and right, then your objection applies only to positions Screen center, Top center and Bottom center.
However, I think that
1) In many cases, subsequent notifications is unnecessary to solve, because they do not exist ( the same UID or replace UID)
2) In other cases, the user can select another position or be reconciled with the fact that it has only half the space ...

Notifications usually begin at a screen corner so they can fill the screen vertically and horizontally as more appear. If a notification starts in the centre of the screen (for example), where should subsequent notifications appear?
